Frostfang Barioth - the Complete Guide - Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
In this guide, I will cover all the details that you need to know on Frostfang Barioth: weakness, quests, strategy, armors, and weapons. You will encounter this monster in Monster Hunter World Iceborne.
So let us get into it
How do you start Frostfang Barioth quest?
This is an event quest so it rotates with different cycles every week. Check the event schedule
You should already have finished the Master Rank story and experience fighting tempered monsters. There are no special requirements for this fight.
Frostfang Barioth Weaknesses
In this section, I will cover tips for the Barioth monster weaknesses.
Physical weak points and hitzones for each weapon
Frostfang Barioth like most monsters has specific weaknesses, and you should exploit them with your weapon. However, it works differently for different weapon types
Cut (sever) - weapons like Greatsword, Lance, Longsword, will deal the highest damage when attacking the head with amber horns and tail.
Blunt - hammers and hunting horns, deal the biggest damage to the head, front legs claws, and wings
Ammo - Bows, Heavy and light bowguns deal the largest damage to the head.
These are general recommendations, how to maximize your damage and they should not be set in stone based on the situation you are in
However...
For example, if during the hunt you are having difficulties with a light bowgun. You should still break Barioth claws to make it less agile.
One thing to note:
You should try to avoid attacking its body with any of the weapons as you will be missing on a lot of damage
Elemental weak points
If you plan on using elemental weapons. Your priority is Fire. Frostfang Barioth has weak resistance to Fire on his claws (before being broken) and Head. So the latter should be your priority.
Another option is to use the Thunder element. It is quite weaker but also can work on the head and claws.
Ailments
If you plan to use ailments, all of them have two-star effectiveness. So if you prefer using Blast or Paralysis weapons there are no drawbacks with them. You will be able to beat the monster easier.
Breakable parts
Frostfang Barioth has multiple breakable parts which are his weakness, which will also reward additional materials:
- Head/Amber Fangs - weakens ice breath attacks and tornadoes
- Claws and Wings
- Tail - can be cut
Frostfang Barioth figh Prepartion
As this is a Variant monster of Barioth you should already have experience with him in Master Rank. However here are the things that you should do before the fight
Equipment
Having 20 Ice resistance will help you to deal with Iceblight, so Ice Resistance skill may be essential. The Iceblight is activated from its Ice breath attacks. Regarding other equipment, it should be standard as you use it to fight normal Ice monsters. However, if you do not want to waste your gear on this you can always use cafeteria food with Elemental Resistance(L)
The fight is in Hoarfrost Reach so take some Hot Drinks with you. Otherwise, you will lose stamina.
Mantles
I suggest taking Iceproff Mantle and Temporale mantle. These are the ones good for learning the fight. However, once you get used to the fight and its ice attacks you can switch Iceproof Mantle to Rocksteady Mantle for more damage output
Frostfang Barioth fight Strategy
The Frostfang Barioth attacks are fairly aggressive and have new mechanics. He will jump around lunge forward, slow down to take a breather, and bite with its fangs. However, with the tips below the fight should be much easier
New attack and mechanic - Frost Breath
This is Barioth's new attack - Frost Breath, which lingers on the ground, and if you are caught in it, you will get frozen.
Once this happens he will do Ground Slams. I personally stand close to his wings to avoid it, as this seems to be the best safe spot. You need to avoid being frozen at all costs
Moreover, the Frost breath attack will apply Iceblight status effect.
Signature Super Slam - Two times
Barioth's super slam will now happen not once but twice. So have this in mind when avoiding. One more tip: if you get caught in the first one, don't stand until the second one finishes.
Still use Clutch Claw
Although clutch claw mechanic is tedious, it will allow you to increase your damage and break Frostfang Barioth claw faster. After that always tenderize Barioth head to maximize the damage. This will allow you to break it faster and decrease damage from ice attacks.
Break his Tail
Many of Barioth's attacks revolve around using its tail for swipes. Due to this, I recommend cutting it off if you are Cut weapon type user.
Break huge Amber Tusks
Breaking them will result in his air tornado and ice attacks becoming much weaker. Moreover, they will reward you with additional materials.
Gear – armor sets and weapons, Palico gear
Personally, they look really good to me, however, they also come with decent skills. Probably they will not replace the Safi’Jiva armor in most meta builds, but they can give you some interesting setups.
The armor gives two skills:
-
Punishing draw – adds a stun effect to draw attacks and slightly increases attack power. Personally this looks an interesting item for Greatsword builds
-
Slugger Secret – which increases maximum level of Slugger to level
Weapons – I think their idea was to help players struggling with Alatreon Fire mode. They come with High elemental ice damage, high Affinity and purple sharpness. Take a look at their design:
Palico Gear – Standard Gear, doesn’t have exceptional status effects, so I would just use it for looks.
For me the first run took about 11 minutes.
Happy hunting!
