The Ultimate Pickpocket Build - Take everything! - Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)
Contents
The Ultimate Pickpocket build
This is somewhat not a standard build, but rather a setup that you can use both for the main characters or hirelings, to have the highest possible chance of stealing equipment, gold, consumables, etc. I think this is mandatory on Honour Mode difficulty and optional for Tactician and below.
The build entails taking the best items and strategies to maximize your chances. Early levels are somewhat difficult to optimize, so I will share how to do it effectively, without getting caught or risking failing your run.
Once you reach level 5, this becomes multiple times easier, and you can break the economy by getting anything you want. In Act 3, you will be able to take anything without a chance of failure, and ready yourself for the hardest fights in the game.
So let's jump into the build!
Class Contribution
The build consists of two classes, which both help immensely to build up your thieving arsenal.
11 Thief Rogue
- Use a unique
Sneak Attack (Ranged) mechanic, which is good early on but falls behind in the late game.
- Additional
Expertise, which will be used to improve Sleight of Hand.
Evasion that drastically reduces incoming spell damage.
- The ultimate pickpocket feature -
Reliable Talent. This will make stealing all consumables like scrolls, arrows, and potions too easy!
Uncanny Dodge can help with survivability if you get attacked, by reducing incoming damage, useful both in combat and when stealing.
- Special bonus action use -
Cunning Action: Dash,
Cunning Action: Hide, which help with engaging and running away for pickpocketing.
Supreme Sneak - can be used to become invisible and escape a situation where you are caught.
Fast Hands is a very important feature, giving an additional bonus action. This can also be used to leave combat, improve mobility, or attack one more time.
1 Trickery Cleric
This might seem a strange choice, but it does serve a good purpose:
Disguise Self - this serves a great purpose of hiding your true identity. Why not? This will not impact your relations with NPCs if you get caught. Still, there is
Mask of the Shapeshifter which somewhat makes this redundant.
Sanctuary - if all comes to worst, and you have to go into combat with guards, just cast
Sanctuary and watch as everyone is looking at you without unable to do anything.

Leveling Overview
Here is a concise table with all the main picks during your leveling progression. For more detailed reasoning, I go further in the article. Also, do not forget to check the recommended gear, as it is crucial.

Starting the Game - Level 1
This section covers the creation screen and what would go into the best Races, Abilities, and Skills for the Pickpocket build. If you have already started playing, feel free to do a respec at Withers and follow along. This will make it easy to follow the build step by step.
Races
Picking a race provides various benefits - abilities, dialogue options, looks, etc. For this specific build, these races do bring a lot of benefits that they would not get, so here are my strict recommendations:
Race | Features | Description |
---|---|---|
![]() |
|
The ultimate pickpocket race (after you get level 5). They get ![]() |
![]() |
|
Duergar Hireling that you can get from Withers. Comes with all the benefits of a normal race pick. |
![]() |
|
Perfect Origin character, which gets ![]() |
![]() |
|
Somewhat inferior race pick. ![]() |
![]() |
|
Similar to the base Halfling pick, but a hireling that you can get from Withers. |
So why are Hirelings important here? Well, you see, you can have your pickpocket as Brinna Brightsong from level 3-5. At level 5, you can get Kree Derryck, as she gets Invisibility, which is much better. This leaves your main party characters free for general world exploration and combat.
Astarion can also serve the role, if you are roleplaying or have him free, but Druegar race or Kree Derryck just makes it so much easier to steal from level 5 with free Invisibility.

Background
For this build, the only backgrounds that matter are those that give Dexterity or Charisma-related skills. Why is that? Well, when guards catch you, you can persuade them to leave you alone, and the next second pickpocket them again! Here are relevant backgrounds:
Background | Skills | Description |
---|---|---|
Charlatan | Deception Sleight of Hand |
A decent background that will save one proficiency on chest lockpicking. |
Urchin | Sleight of Hand Stealth |
The most relevant pick in my opinion, as it covers both important parts - stealth and pickpocketing, with lockpicking |
Criminal | Deception Stealth |
Gives stealth proficiency and helps with Deception, which is excellent for the main character. |
Entertainer | Acrobatics Performance |
These picks are here for role play mainly. Still, the charisma-based skills are relevant, especially as you will need to convince guards that your deeds were "for a good cause". |
Guild Artisan | Insight Persuasion |
|
Noble | History Persuasion |
|
Soldier | Athletics Indimidation |
Abilities
Now, let's take a look at the abilities of the Thief Pickpocket build. Correct allocation will allow you to maximize the early gameplay and get good modifier bonuses.
The core mechanic to understand for ability points is that they give "ability modifiers" that apply to various skill checks. For example, Charisma works on Intimidation and persuasion checks. Wisdom on Survival or Animal Handling, and so on.
You get a higher ability modifier on even values - 10, 12, 14, etc. So keeping it on odd may be useless. However, there are various +1/2 modifiers in the game, specifically Auntie Ethel Hair or Feats that help round this up.
Ability | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
![]() |
8 | Not relevant |
![]() ![]() |
16 (14+2) | The ability determines bonuses to Armor Class, initiative, and pickpocketing checks, it's always good to have high dexterity. |
![]() |
14 | The Constitution will help with maintaining spell concentration and improving the HP pool. |
![]() |
8 | Not a relevant ability |
![]() |
12 | Just enough to remove the negative modifier for Wisdom. |
![]() |
16 (15+1) | Charisma is relevant to persuade guards or traders that you were stealing "in good will". |
Skills and Expertise
Overall, the skills should be impacted by your roleplaying and background decisions. However, you would still want those that will give you the best benefits. Maximize these:
- Stealth
- Sleight of Hand
After that, you can take the Charisma ones:
- Deception
- Intimidation
- Performance
- Persuasion
Leveling and Pickpocket - Levels 2-12
Now, this is a detailed progression of the Pickpocket build. I recommend following it, as I will give recommendations on which traders to pickpocket when, or how to progress with your setup.
Level 2
By this time, you should have landed in the Wilderness area already. This is where the first interesting step is taken. You will need to multiclass into Cleric. This is not necessary once you are level 5. However, it does simplify some things, and gives additional protection, especially in Honor mode, if, accidentally, the whole village starts attacking you.
You can multiclass by clicking this button in the leveling screen:

![]() |
More of a roleplaying spell that can help avoid various situations or pass racial dialogues. For example, Drows have special choices and an easy way to pass through fights in Act 1. |
Deity
In my opinion, Tymora would be the most relevant.

Prepare Spells

![]() |
This is the ultimate spell that will help you pickpocket. Even if the whole village goes into combat, they cannot attack you as long as you have this. Then you can use ![]() |
Level 3 - Rogue Lv 2
The level-up gives a few good improvements that will be useful for pickpocketing.

---|---|
![]() |
Easily enter sneak with a bonus action. |
![]() |
Cover more distance this turn: double your movement speed, using a bonus action. |

Retreat safely: moving won't provoke Opportunity Attacks. |
Starting pickpocketing
So with level 3, you are ready to do some pickpocketing. This is great as you can build a war chest, grab some items, get consumables, scrolls, etc. Make sure to get these items:
After that, make sure to get/apply these buffs:
Cat's Grace with a cleric using
Enhance Ability
Vampire Bite if you are Astarion
Disguise Self - to not impact negatively vendor relations
Your pickpocket targets:
- Arron - very easy to steal from, does not aggro tieflins
- Dammon - has some useful gear, but does aggro tieflings. You should run to the nearby Secluded Room to teleport out of the area.
Before pickpocket:
- Cast
Guidance
- Enter stealth mode
- Enter turn-based mode
- Pickpocket target until failure
- Try to persuade, if it succeeds, continue stealing
- If persuasion fails, enter combat. Either use
Sanctuary or
Dash +
Cunning Action: Dash and run away
- Once you run far away, combat automatically ends
- You can go back and steal again
- Profit
So this is more or less a short overview of how to pickpocket most of the targets. I will go deeper into this in the Build Mechanics Section. Here it is:
So at level 3, you can fully stack up for everything that you need. The next major stop is level 5.
Level 4 - Rogue Lv 3
This level unlocks a Rogue subclass, which gives a little boost in terms of action economy:
Subclass
Overview | |
---|---|
![]() |
|
Features | |
![]() |
A very powerful feature, giving a full attack for some builds utilizing offhand attacks. |
![]() |
Nothing special for this type of build. |
Level 5 - Rogue Lv 4
This is an important level and a big turning point for the build. If you are using Hireling, there is no reason not to start using Kree Derryck from Withers. The duergar's ability - Invisibility is very powerful, especially here, where you will get caught stealing. After that, just become
Invisible and wait while the enemy leaves combat.

Feat
Feat | Description |
---|---|
Ability Improvement - +2 Dexterity | This is the optimal pick, it will help both in combat and for pickpocketing, improving your chances of success. |
Advanced stealing
So now you can do some very fast and effective stealing. First, let's go through the main things:
First, if you are using Astarion or Halfling, here is the main option:
- If you are using Astarion or are a Halfling, the running method with
Dash +
Cunning Action: Dash still works, but it takes longer and is not as effective.
- With additional bonus action, and some gear you can run away on initital turn -
Dash +
Cunning Action: Dash +
Cunning Action: Dash +
Haste Helm +
Crusher's Ring, gives a lot of movement speed, 30 m+.
Arrow of Darkness can be used to set up a field where you can hide undetected. Do not shoot it at traders, or they will get aggroed.
However, for Duergars, it becomes ridiculously easy to steal stuff, and magnitudes more effective:
- You can start using
Invisibility from Duergar when available
- Get
Volo's Ersatz Eye, some traders become invisible, so this helps with seeing them. Another option is
Scroll of See Invisibility.
Elixir of Vigilance gives bonus initiative, which is useful when you enter combat to go first. You don't want to get attacked.
Safe Traders at this level:
- Derryth Bonecloak - pretty safe, even if you enter combat, you can become invisible and steal again. She does become invisible herself, which becomes irritating. But the gold trove is huge.
Level 6 - Rogue Lv 5
Nothing fancy, more features:
Feature | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
A solid survivability improvement. |
Stealing targets
At this stage, you will probably enter the Rosymorn Monastery Trial. There are a few relevant traders here:
Safe target:
- Lady Esther - can get some good gear, if she finds you, she will enter combat. Become invisible and steal again.
- A'jak'nir Jeera - githyanki Trader, has plenty of good items and some good arrows like
Arrow of Many Targets,
Arrow of Fiend Slaying, etc.
Level 7 - Rogue Lv 6
Nothing special this level up. At this level, you should be able to reach two major areas, which will help with stealing - Moonrise Towers and Last Light Inn
Skills
You gain additional skill expertise picks:
- Deception/Persuasion/Performance - helps with persuading your pickpocket targets
- Acrobatics
Pickpocketing
Make sure to get Leather Armour +2 from the gear trader like Dammon. This will give +1 to Sleight of Hand rolls.
Some targets that I recommend, now that you have access to new areas:
- Dammon - he has some good gear
- Roah Moonglow - scrolls, consumables, and gear
Level 8 - Rogue Lv 7
Nothing fancy here, just a new feature:
Feature | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
Improves your damage resistance to spells. |
Level 9 - Rogue Lv 8
Level 5 spell slots are unlocked with some additional invocations:
Feat
Feat | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
Take +1 Dexterity, this will round it to 20. |
Pickpocket related
If you are in Minflayer Colony, get Resonance Stone as it will make it easier to get Advantage on the dexterity checks - sleight of hand.
Level 10 - Rogue Lv 9
A new feature is unlocked. You will also enter Act 3 Rivington either at the start or mid-level.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
This is an alternative to ![]() ![]() |
Pickpocket things
So there are a few things that you can get in Rivington that will help with pickpocketing:
Nimblefinger Gloves - you can use
Disguise Self to turn into a gnome, and still use the
Invisibility from Duergar.
- Alternative gloves -
Unlucky Thief's Gloves, but they come with some additional management.
Shapeshifter's Boon Ring - if you use
Nimblefinger Gloves, you automatically shapeshift and get the bonus
Here are some relevant traders that are good to take on:
- Exxvikyap - perfect pickpocket target with some good gear
- Entharl Danthelon - another good target to build up a war chest, and get good items.
Level 11 - Rogue Lv 10
The main highlight of this level is another feat, which depends on your decision whether you took Auntie Ethel Hair.
Feat
Feat | Description |
---|---|
Ability Improvement - +2 Dexterity | If you did not take Auntie Ethel Hair +1 Dexterity, you will have 18 Dexterity. This feat would set it to 20. |
![]() |
This feat is useful both in combat and pickpocketing. The moment you get caught, you will go first and become ![]() |
Level 12
And the last level is very important to create the almighty pickpocket build, which will be able to steal anything, leave nothing, and become rich!
Feature | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
This is the ultimate pickpocket feature, giving a minimum 10 rolls. With all the bonuses, you can now still anything with almost 0% chance of getting caught. |
Pickpocket targets
So by this time, you have all the necessary gear, and you can pickpocket a few more targets for the ultimate amount of consumables, items, and gold:
- Dammon - good items and other
- Derryth Bonecloak - consumables like elixirs and potions
- Sorcerous Sundries - Galore of unlimited Scrolls
That's it, the build is done!
Maximizing Ability Scores
Now, as the build progression is covered, there are a few aspects and important decisions you will have to make throughout the game. These will decide your final score for abilities.
Dexterity
- 16 Dexterity - the base from character creation.
- Feat 1 - Ability Improvement - +2 Dexterity.
- Feat 2 - Ability Improvement - +2 Dexterity.
- Act 3 - Mirror of Loss - (most likely it's not worth bothering unless this is the main character) +2 Dexterity
These will allow you to reach 20-22 natural Dexterity, which helps with lockpicking, stealing, and ranged attacks.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Let's take a look at what consumables you can use to further empower the build.
Here are the main consumable recommendations for pickpocketing:
Consumable | Description |
---|---|
![]() |
Become invisible, perfect for when you don't have ![]() |
![]() |
Extra initiative is great when you are caught. This means you go earlier, and can run away or become invisible, before anyone stops or attacks you. |
![]() |
Some traders will become ![]() |
![]() |
Perfect option to set up areas where you can hide and pickpocket the target. |
![]() |
An easy way to get an advantage on Dexterity checks. |
Illithid Powers
This special mechanic in Baldur's Gate 3 allows you to consume tadpoles and unlock special Illithid Powers.
At first, you can only use the base powers. As you move to Act 3, you will be able to unlock the outer ring powers, also called Elite.
Illithid Power | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
![]() |
Base | Beneficial power to take as it does not have any costs, and provides only benefits on the first hits with attack rolls. |
![]() |
Base | It's an easy way to ensure you land critical hits. |

Base | It can help to kill an enemy faster if it is left with a few HP. |
![]() |
Base | A great way to weaponize your reaction before obtaining ![]() |
![]() |
Base | Decreases enemy ability score. |
![]() |
Elite | It can be used to maximize the effectiveness of charisma-based skills, especially those relevant to the main character. |
![]() |
Elite | Potent spell that can be used to pull enemies together. You can then follow up with area-of-effect spells or attacks. In general, it is a very effective action in the hands of any character. |
![]() |
Elite | It can be used to save yourself from a deadly spell. This is especially relevant as you will have a disadvantage on mental saving throws. |
![]() |
Elite | Remove the cost of spell slots or charges. |

Build Mechanics
In this section, I would like to dive deep into how to play the Pickpocket Build. This will help you utilize it to the fullest and correctly use various actions and spells throughout the game.
Important Mechanics and Combos
Let's go through key mechanics and tips on how to use the build effectively.
Understanding how to approach Traders
Here I will briefly cover on how to approach the stealing mechanics. For more in-depth, I recommend checking my Pickpocketing Guide, which goes deeper into the mechanics.
To start pickpocketing, you need to enter Hiding via
Hide or
Cunning Action: Hide. You can only do that if the area is not in the vision of the NPC
Once you are ready, approach the NPC and click on them. You will see a cursor change and give "pickpocket" tooltip. Before that I recommend entering turn-based mode so that other NPCs would not approach and find you.
A screen will appear, which will tell you how much you will need to roll to get the item safely. Generally, it is incorrect as it doesn't take into account many of the bonuses or advantages you have, but it's still a good sign of how risky the item is:
If a trader is in a public area, and you have no way to approach them without being seen, use Arrow of Darkness to create a field where you can hide. Do not shoot it at the NPC, and make sure the radius does not touch the NPC. Here is a good example of how to shoot:
Hide inside the fog, and start stealing :)
Prebuffing for pickpocketing
So here are some buffs that I recommend doing before you go into pickpocketing, not all of them are accessible from Act 1, but you will get more and more of these as you play
Guidance - the base pick that will help with any rolls.
Cat's Grace - either from
The Graceful Cloth or
Enhance Ability of Cleric/Bard. Later, you can use
Resonance Stone for the Advantage and skip the previous options.
- Ready
Arrow of Darkness if the trader does not have a place that is not in view of other NPCs.
Elixir of Vigilance - to ensure you go early if the combat starts
Potion of Invisibility, if everything goes to worst, have this on hand.
Disguise Self - to cover yourself up, so that if you are caught, the main character doesn't get an opinion penalty.
Disguise Self even with Duergar
So, Disguise Self is a very important spell for this setup. First, it hides your identity, so you don't receive any opinion penalty if you are caught. Just break the transformation, and you are safe.
Second, the bonuses from Duergar, and specifically Invisibility, are still available, and you can cast it at will.
Third, you get some bonuses from specific items - Shapeshifter's Boon Ring and
Nimblefinger Gloves, which improve Sleight of Hand and make your stealing chances higher.
Resetting vendor inventories
So to build wealth fast, as a true investor, you need to manipulate the market. There is one very fast way - level up! You can take one of your characters to Withers and respec to level 1 (I recommend Rogue or Fighter as they have the bare minimum choice when leveling up).
So you pick the enemy's pockets, then go to your level 1 character and level up. Go back to your pickpocket and take the gold/items again. Level up once more, and back to the pickpocket. You get the idea.
To be fair, this felt like cheating, and I decided I would do a single run through the main traders with the Pickpocket hireling once every Long Rest. This felt more natural and reasonable.
Pickpocket targets
So the important thing to know if the target can be safely pickpocketed. What do I mean by that? They will not run away, and even if they attack you, you can still trade with them. These traders are perfect for building a war chest, getting consumables, etc.
Those that are not mentioned here, I would not touch them, and buy everything from them. This way, you minimize the risk of them running away with all their stock for good. Generally, those NPCs that get the Temporarily Hostile condition will leave you alone after you escape.

Conclusion
Thank you for reading the Pickpocket Build for Baldur's Gate 3. This is more of a role-play build. But I do think that you need to have it in Honour Mode run on your hireling. Building a good war chest, consumable troves, and arrows makes your run extremely easy!
Cheers!
